The first ever Friends Life Women’s Tour comes to Welwyn Garden City on Saturday 10 May, and the council can now reveal the host of free activities and entertainment taking place from 10am in the town centre on the day.
Ahead of the Stage Four finish in the town centre, BOB FM will be hosting live music and more on the Howard Centre stage, including popular acts such as Roxanne de Bastion, George Breakfast and The Ghost of Samantha, led by Samantha Grint. Next to the stage in Howardsgate there will be a continental market offering a gastronomic array from pastries to paella and fine wines to charcuterie and cheeses.
A separate marketplace on Howardsgate promises something for everyone, whether it’s the Wellness Centre for all your Pilates needs or Mill Green Museum selling locally produced flour and bread. And if you haven’t heard of the Hell’s Belles Roller Girls, the Herts Roller Derby stall is a must!
Hertfordshire County Council will be hosting bike safety checks, scooter safety training and beginner biking to help children and their parents learn the basics of cycling, while Gosling Sports Park will offer the chance to try your hand at new sports such as GO/FENCE, the fun and easy way to start fencing.
She Herts…, the countywide campaign aiming to get more women and girls more active, will be encouraging people to have a go at netball alongside Miranda the Meer cat, the Hertfordshire Mavericks netball team mascot. There will also be an opportunity to learn some football skills with Arsenal Ladies Football Club and practice your bike riding with the Welwyn Wheelers in a timed cycle competition. There will be lots of giveaways and competition prizes to be won – you can even test your cycling skills to see how quickly you can make a smoothie whilst on a bike!
Stage Four principal sponsors, Tesco, will also be there to support their new schools programme, the Tesco Eat Happy Project, which aims to help children have a happy and healthy relationship with food. They’ll be giving away recipe cards and samples made specially on the day.
Last but not least is the official Promo Zone where you can meet the names behind the sponsors and partners of the 2014 Friend’s Life Women’s Tour including SKODA, Pro Vision cycle clothing, Festina watches and British Cycling.
The race itself is due to arrive in the town centre from 1.50pm via Brockswood Lane before winding round The Campus, then sprinting towards the Parkway finish line. Visit www.welhat.gov.uk/thewomenstour for more details or click here to find a stage map.
