Saturday saw Marianne Vos take her second stage win of the week, outsprinting Giorgia Bronzini in Welwyn Garden City for the Stage Four victory.
A day on from winning in Clacton whilst wearing the YodelDirect Points jersey, Vos took the win in Hertfordshire clad in the yellow of leader of the Friends Life e Women’s Tour to further extend her lead in the race.
“We didn’t want to miss important breakaways with the team, once you have the yellow you have the pressure on. We didn’t want to control the bunch the whole time….I was really happy that my team were up there. Every day it is a guess as to how the roads will be.
“This is a new race but a very important one it gets a lot of attention all the big teams are here trying to win a stage, so for me this is an important race.
“Well the organisation is really good and with the crowds as well, I definitely think it can be one of the biggest stage races in the world and the women’s calendar. So far I think this is the biggest one if you look to the attention it gets.
“There are a lot of people in orange, I don’t know if they are for Boels [Dolmans team] but it also feels a bit for me.”
Finally, as she fights for victory in the Friends Life Women’s Tour, Marianne was asked if she is also fighting a battle on behalf of women’ cycling?
“Its' not a battle that I have to fight, women’s cycling is growing and I feel that in my career a lot of things have changed, a lot of thing have got better, the attention is more, teams are better. I think London 2012 made a difference world-wide, here in 2014 the stage we have here is the perfect platform to show the world the beauty of women’s cycling.”
