Emma Trott came along to the Broxbourne Borough Council offices in Churchgate, Cheshunt on Wednesday to mark the start of Stage Four of the first ever Women’s Tour.
Cheshunt resident, Emma Trott, a successful international cyclist is part of cycling team ‘Boel Dolmans’, one of the 14 teams announced as taking part in the Women’s Tour. She said, “It’s special for me to start in Cheshunt. It’s been my home for all of my 24 years. Although I know the area, it’s going to be tough. I’m going to enjoy it though. We’ve got a strong team and I think we have a good chance of winning this stage”.
Emma was welcomed to the starting line by the Mayor of Broxbourne, Cllr Bren Perryman, the Mayor’s consort Freddie Pearce, Cllr Hazel Jackson, Cabinet Member for Leisure and Recreation and Wayne Thompson, Store Manager of Tesco Extra Brookfield together with SweetSpot, organisers of the Women’s Tour cycle race.
The Mayor said at the launch “We are proud to be supporting this unique event and hope it encourages greater participation in sport by women and girls in our Borough with all the benefits it brings. I also hope that members of the public see the importance of this for women’s sport and line the route to support the riders. I wish everyone participating good luck”.
Tesco PLC has now joined as the primary sponsor of Stage Four. Commenting on their involvement, Wayne Thompson, the store manager of Tesco Extra Brookfield said, “We’re delighted to be supporting Stage Four of the inaugural Women’s Tour event, which will take place close to our own head offices in Hertfordshire. The Women’s Tour not only provides us with an ideal opportunity to support a local sporting event but to also highlight the work we’ve been doing to help our colleagues and customers lead healthier lives. Cycling has become increasingly popular over the last few years and a national event for women in the UK will only help to promote the sport further in local communities up and down the country”.
